Search Board Minutes

BUUF Board Meeting July 18, 2010

Present:  Lisa Dalgleish, David Sarra, Janice Zerfas, Amy Eklund, Chris Sirotiak, Emily Hecht, Dorothy Long, (Jim McConnell arrived approx 9:30)

Minutes read, corrected, and Chris moved to approve as corrected, Emily seconded, passed.

Election of officers:  President:  Janice Zerfas, Vice-President:  Emily Hecht, Treasurer:  Dorothy Long, Secretary.  Chris moved to accept this slate, Lisa seconded, slate accepted.

Dave said he still needs to contact the teachers for next fall and determine the content and age groups that will be served.
Ministerial search committee:  Dave reported that they met with IAN from CMD.  Plan of action is to meet again and go over the survey to determine what BUUF members desire.   Then we would evaluate the current candidate(s) and determine whether they meet the needs that were determined by the survey.  If so, then the search committee would make a recommendation to the board.  Then it would go to a congregational vote if accepted by the board.  We would then need to decide what percentage in favor would constitute the smallest that would be acceptable to call a minister.  What we are able to pay is equivalent to about quarter time.  If our current candidate(s) do not meet the requirements, then we would proceed to a wider search.

Mike Laborn is willing to do child care beginning in August and he would make a serious commitment.  Chris knows a teenager who may be willing as well so maybe they could alternate.  They will need to get fingerprinted etc.  There needs to be a backup plan for when one of the childcare workers is ill.  What we are currently paying is less than minimum wage. It was suggested that we increase the payment to $25 per Sunday and that a written agreement be made with them.  They also have the option of not being paid and utilizing the hours for their required community service for school.

A quick option for the solid door might be to use a baby gate.  We also need a hook put on the door so it can’t be shut by the little people.  Dave would like to have the contract, the candidates set by next meeting.  Emily will do the interview and application.  Amy will check at home and see if she has a baby gate and if not, will let Dave know so he can send out a request to the congregation.

Safe congregation committee:  Lisa passed the envelope to the committee.  The committee is specified, The President, The DRE, the Religious Leader, and two members of the congregation.  Its time for the committee to get rolling and get things prepared for next fall.  Janice will get the forms together this week.  Emily and Gloria have expressed interest.
Gary turned in a set of keys.  Dave still needs to get a list together of who has keys.  The piano will be tuned this week.  The newsletter should contain the information from the annual meeting.  Everyone is to send their reports to Dave.

Welcoming congregation:  throughout the year, or all in October.

We are uncertain if we need a new pianist this year.  We should send Maddie a thank you card.  Emily will check with Harvey to see the current status of accompaniment.

Chris will be giving Moustafa some community service hours but we need the board to officially sign off on this.

Dorothy noticed that part of the plum tree was lying on the ground.  The tree needs to come down.  While they were working, the neighbor came over and offered to take the brush and mentioned that he has been mowing our lawn.  The brakes went out on the van and so there is no way to get the mower over here right now.  The neighbor said he doesn’t mind.

Dorothy will let the neighbor know the situation and check with Dick regarding the status of fixing the van.

Lisa has the signups for the various committees (kitchen, co/sa, membership, building and grounds, re, caring, special projects) from the annual meeting.   She will make copies of all of them and then will distribute them to the committee chairs.  We have no chair for building and grounds right now.  It was suggested we call and meeting and let them select their own chair.  Dorothy will get that moving.  Nobody signed up for caring.  We also need Sunday service and music.

Dorothy distributed a balance sheet and a profit and loss statement.

There is an item called “undeposited funds” and she is unsure what that is for.  It may have been in-kind donations. It seems we are in reasonably good shape.  Chris would like to know from Dorothy know what the goal should be for the service auction. Auction is 10/23.  It will have a Halloween theme.

Jim McConnell said he can put a window in the doors of the RE rooms. He could help the kids do this.  It will cost about $60 per door.  The kids could raise the money and then Jim could supervise the kids in this project. Jim will take charge of this project and will get at least the nursery window done before church begins in September.

Jim asked what he should be doing as far as turning in expenses for pastoral care he has been called to do, etc.  Jim should have a contract for what he is asked to do this year.  We need a ministerial committee in addition to the search committee.  Dave will take responsibility for getting that going.

Jim said Rod is willing to give us a lighted chalice, either the one currently sitting in the Fuller Fellowship hall or a custom designed one.

Emily moved to adjourn, Dorothy seconded.  Passed.

August 8 next meeting.
